G-68286 Private Sydney Mole, 6th Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment).

British War and Victory Medals (G-68286 Pte. S. Mole. The Queen’s R.) nearly very fine SOLD

Served overseas with the 6th Battalion, Queen's. The number dates to the 4th April 1918, and would have been issued in France from  J Infantry Base Depot at Etaples. At the time of arrival in France, this man was probably part of a draft from the 245th Infantry Battalion, formerly the 23rd Training Reserve Battalion. Survived the war.

Born in Brighton in about 1885 (aged 31 when conscripted  on the 29th June 1916). Posted to 25th Middx Regt (1st July 1916) then to 99th TRB (1st September 1916). Transferred to Queen's (RWS) on the 11th September 1916. To Infantry Labour Company No 2 on the 1st January 1917 and then transferred to the 110 Labour Coy on the on the 9th May 1917. To Eastern Command Labour Centre on the 12th January 1918 and 302 Labour Coy on the 27th April 1918. To France on the 4th May 1918. Demobilised 3rd March 1919; intended address given as 45 Cambridge Street, Brighton. Papers in WO 363.

William Johnson a carman from Peckham, London was 29 years and nine months old when he attested with the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment on the 5th August 1915. This places his date of birth as about November 1885. At the time of his attestation he was living at 32 Parsons Mead, West Croydon. He was the husband of Winifred Mary Johnson (nee Marshall) whom he had married in 1913, and the father of Nellie Johnson (born 9th January 1915) and Winifred Mary Johnson (born 19th April 1917).

William was initially posted to the 3rd Battalion and was appointed lance-corporal on the 10th December 1915, subsequently losing his stripe on the 30th March 1916.  He served overseas with the 1st Battalion from the 2nd February 1917 and was killed in action on 23 April 1917, four days after his second daughter was born. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. William's effects were sent to his widow who, by August 1918, was living at 38 Bassett Road, Lavender Hill, Clapham Junction, London SW11. An alternative address of 59 Wickersley Road is also given.

Appears in casualty list, wounded, on 20th March 1916. Entitled to 1914-15 Star trio. To Class Z on the 18th Feb 1919. SOLD

6552 Pte Alfred Broadbent, 1/4th West Riding Regiment; later 547209 Labour Corps. Appears in casualty list, wounded, published 20th January 1917. SOLD

1815 Pte Frederick (Fred) Clarkin was born in Halifax, Yorkshire in 1883. He attested with the 4th (Militia) Bn of the Yorkshire Regt on the 5th November 1902 (stated aged, 17 years and 3 months) and then enlisted with the regular Yorkshire Regt on the 19th December 1902 (reg number 7081), for 3&9; later extended to 8&4, serving in the UK, India and South Africa until discharged for misconduct on the 17th May 1909 (6 years and 150 days).

Attested with the 4th Duke of Wellington’s Regiment on the 8th August 1914. Served overseas with D Coy, 1/4th Battalion from the 14th April 1915. Accidentally wounded in the chest on the 20th September 1915 by a bullet exploding in a fire when lunch was being cooked. Returned to duty on the 26th September and killed in action on 16 October 1915. He is buried in Bard Cottage Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium. Entitled to 1914-15 Star trio. Papers in WO 96, WO 97 and WO 363. SOLD

38929 Pte Robert Walton, 2nd KOYLI, later 9th KOYLI. Number dates to Jan 1918. For instance, 38923 joined the 2nd KOYLI on 4th Jan 1918, having arrived in France the previous day. This man had originally attested 31st Oct 1916, mobilised 19th Feb 1917 and joined 90th TRB on the 22nd Feb 1917. Transferred to 264 Infantry battalion on the 1st July 1917. Likelihood is that Robert Walton was a young soldier, probably 18 years old in 1917 and probably from Yorkshire. Entitled to pair. SOLD

10196 Oswald Fraser Wheater, a career soldier who served with the 2nd and 8th Battalions, East Yorkshire Regt; later 23442 6th Dorsetshire Regiment. Transferred to Section B, Army Reserve on the 8th February 1919. 10196 indicates that he joined the East Yorks Regt in about Feb 1914.

Whilst serving with the 8th E Yorks Regt received a slight gunshot wound to his right thigh. He was sent to No 4 Stationary Hospital on the 9th October 1917 and was discharged to duty on the 28th October 1917. By this stage he was 29 years old, and had served 6 years of which two years and 4 months had been with the Field Force. His name appeared in a casualty list published on the 25th October 1917. SOLD

16835 Pte Lewis George Playle, Royal Sussex Regiment; later 554686 Pte, Labour Corps. Born in Ridgewell, Essex in 1898 or 1899 (aged 2 and 12 in 1901 and 1911 census returns). SWB roll states that he enlisted on 25th May 1916 but this is the date of mobilisation and suggests that John was born on the 25th May 1898. The regimental number dates to June 1917. Research suggests he probably arrived overseas in May or June 1917 and possibly served with 2nd Battalion. 

Appears in War Office casualty list published on the 25th September 1917. Subsequently transferred to Labour Corps and discharged due to sickness on 18th July 1919. Married Ellen L Whatley in 1921 (Lambeth, 1st quarter) and son, John E F Playle, born in 1922 (birth registered Lambeth, 3rd quarter). Died 1923 (Halstead, 3rd quarter) aged 25.

5098, later 322311 Pte Benjamin Balding, a resident of West Ham, probably attested under the derby Scheme and  joined the 6th London Regt in January 1916. He was KiA on the 20th July 1917, one week before his daughter's first birthday. Buried at Metz-en-Couture Communal Cemetery, France and commemorated on the Gas Light & Coke Company Memorial at Twelvetrees Crescent, Bromley by Bow, E3 3TE. Entitled to pair. Sold

Arthur Turner was born in Little Horsted, Sussex, and attested with the Royal Sussex Regiment at Lewes. He served with the 8th (Pioneer) Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and died of wounds on 27 November 1917. He is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. Commemorated on Chailey memorial.  Extensive supporting research. £40.

Born in December 1884, L/9337 Private William Ernest Cousins was a career soldier who originally attested on the 16th November 1904. He was wounded and captured at Mons on the 23rd August 1914; one of 453 4th Middlesex other rank casualties on this day, later repatriated as a PoW and discharged on the 29th December 1915. Papers in WO 364 contain a lot of correspondence from William Cousins and there is also a PoW report in WO 161 (below, courtesy The National Archives). Entitled to 1914 Star trio and SWB. Name partially obscured. SOLD

598, later 350336 Pte Edward Mackenzie Walton, 1st East Lancashire Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.  Joined this unit on the 5th December 1914.  Discharged aged 31 years and 4 months (born circa October 1887) on the 19th February 1919. Entitled to 1914-15 Star trio and SWB.

A strong candidate is Edward M Walton, born 21st September 1887, who by 1939 was a widowed verger living at 36 Greenbank Avenue, Wembley. This man's death was registered at Paddington in the 3rd quarter of 1962. £30.

Fred Allen was born in Tupton on 16th May 1909. He was the son of William and Mary Allen. The 1911 Census shows him residing at 6 Springwell Terrace, New Tupton (I believe they may be the same place). William Allen was a coal miner (deputy) as was two of his sons. The young Fred also had a sister. Fred also became a miner and was residing at Tapton, near Chesterfield when he joined the RA (Tapton is a different village near Tupton!). He attested at Derby on 2nd January 1928 for 3 years regular service and 9 on the reserve. His RA career was short lived. He was discharged on 12th January 1928 under King's Regulations Para 363 (VI) (a). He joined the Royal Corps of Signals (TA) on 13th May 1935, and agree I 'Signalman' it is. It appears he died in Chesterfield in 1982.             £50

Sutton Publishing. (Subject: World War II - General) Major D'Arcy Mander was awarded a DSO in 1944 for espionage work which he carried out in Rome following his escape from captivity. Mander had been captured while serving with the Green Howards in the Western Desert, and flown to Italy. Mander accepted captivity for a while, putting his time to good use by learning Italian. In 1943 he escaped from a prisoner-of-war train in northern Italy and, adopting the alias Pietro Bartoli, he proceeded to walk to Rome. The city was under German occupation and Mander decided to set up his own intelligence network.
